Sim site name shortage alert
That list in full

The Oxford English Dictionary announced this week that only 115 words starting with 'sim' were left unused by Sims webmasters, sparking a site-name-shortage scare.

A spokeswoman for the Oxford English Dictionary confirmed:

'It's true. Despite our best efforts over the last year to define more words starting with 'sim', we're running out of words for webmasters to use. It's simply terrible.'

'No pun intended' she added.

Missing Link

Sims fans were confused and disappointed this week as they failed to find the excellent Sims parody site mentioned by Will Wright in a recent interview.

Despite the ringing endorsement from the creator of The Sims, fans could find no trace of the site on the Maxis Fansites Page.

Have you seen this site?

'It's kinda weird' said one 'You'd think they would link to the site if Will Wright himself liked it'

'I guess they must be too busy with Simsville and Sims Online, or something. It's a darn shame: I, and probably thousands of others would dearly love to find this site'

The Doily Update

Week by week, the Doily Update will take you through the steps required to create your own Sims object.

This week:
Preparing the images for the Transmogrifier

1. Trim away the blue background from the doily.

2. Re-size the doily image to 100% width, 50% height.

3. Cut-and-paste the cookie images onto the doily, resizing to 85%.

4. Don't forget to Sharpen the resized image.

5. Save the image as a bitmap file (.BMP)

Next week:
Transmogrifying the object.

Optical Illusion of the Week

Look closely at the red line running down the centre of the page.

Does the left-hand column look wider than the right-hand column?

If you said 'Yes' then you have just experienced an optical illusion: they are exactly the same width.

According to DreamWeaver, that is.

Coming sooner than you think

Maxis this week announced a welcome new addition to their popular Sims range: The Sims Offline.

'We are aware that many fans are unwilling or unable to pay a monthly fee to play The Sims Online" said Maxis spokesman Ralph Horris, "Rather than leave these fans behind, we're pushing ahead with the offline version in parallel development"

The new game is expected to be 100% compatible with the exisiting game, as well as its best-selling expansion packs.

"Let me be very clear about this" confirmed Ralph, "Compatibility will not be a problem"

"In fact, it's so compatible, you won't even know you're playing a different game".

Sim Am I Hot or Not?

Life's a beach...
5.5 HU

8.3 HU

The slimmest of margins was all that separated SimFreaks' Veronica from Sim Am I Hot or Not? history this week, as she narrowly missed getting TWO sims into the Top Three.

With a rating of 8.3 Hot Units, the Incredible Hunk outshone Allison's (Aloha Sims) beach babe, which attracted a respectible score of 5.5 HU.

  Sims World News
This week on The History Channel

This week, The History Channel takes you on a trip back through time to a world very different to the one we know today. The year is 1999 - a Pre-Sim era long forgotten by modern civilization.

The world of 1999 was a very different place: computers were used mostly for word-processing or Quake II, and the internet was not very busy yet.

The television

The television, or TV, was the primary source of entertainment, with weekly shows being the focus of attention. Today, not many people realise that the popular Friends downloads started out as a weekly situation comedy, much like The Simpsons, but with only two good seasons.

For many people of the Pre-Sim era, the partner was the person of primary importance (see also: boyfriend, girlfriend, spouse). This partner would often co-habit, or at least be seen regularly, an event known as a date.
In those days it was considered quite normal to spend several hours a day with a partner - remember, they didn't have The Sims then, and had to make do.

Partners:
remember them?
But it wasn't all hard work. Many of the people of 1999 had recreational pursuits, known as hobbies, to pass the time.
Sports
Reading
Gardening
Kids

It might seem incredible today, but many hours of leisure-time were spent watching organised competitions known as sports, or sitting quietly reading a book. Some brave souls ventured outside to grow decorative plants, a hobby we now know as gardening. And of course, in those days, parental attention was often focused on the children, or kids.

We hope you have enjoyed this journey back through the mists of time. Stay tuned to The History Channel for our next History Special: Life before TMog.

Issue 15 poll results: Readers definitely indecisive

Readers of The Sim voted decisively in favour of indecision this week, with 63% claiming that they were 'not sure' whether they were decisive or not.

A small number of voters, 7%, stated that they were definitely not decisive. Only 30% of voters emphatically confirmed that they were decisive, and thus made any sense at all**.

Jezebel releases Sim Office Assistant

Word (97) to the wise

Microsoft Office users were pleasantly surprised this week when Jezebel's Closet released 'Sim Office Assistant', the first in a new range of 'Sims in the Workplace' products.

The Sims Service Pack 1 (SSP-1) replaces the much-loved and not-at-all annoying 'paperclip' animation with a range of stylishly attired Sim assistants, customised through an intuitive user interface.

"This is so great" said one Office user, "I hated those perky-yet-helpful little animations that came with Office 97. Now all the other guys in the office come over to my PC to get Word help and Powerpoint tips. That's how good it is"

ICANN announces .sim top-level domain name
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) today announced that an additional top-level domain name for the Internet - .sim - will be operational sometime in the next two months.

This will be the first new global top-level domain (TLD) since .com and others were launched in the 1980s.

Spokesman Armand Hammer said: "We calculate that approximately 57% of all internet traffic is Sims-related, so this move made a lot of sense."
